History of Pharmacy

(Lectures 3 h/week. Assessment: final exam at the end of each term or September)

  • The main aim of this course is to teach the historical aspect of the pharmaceutical science.
  • 1st period - Knowledge of Medicine and Pharmacy: -Assyria-Babylonia, Egypt, India, China.
  • 2nd period - Greece (Hippocratic medical writings), Rome (Galen), Byzantium (monastic Medicine and Pharmacy).
  • 3rd period - The Arabs and the European Middle Ages. Transit ways of knowledge. Universities emerge, the birth of European professional pharmacy. The idea of renaissance. Chemical drugs.
  • 4th period - Development of Pharmacy during the last two centuries.
  • Narcotic plants are known since Antiquity, so their Legislation is included in this course
