“Science, Technology, Society—Science and Technology Studies”

Call for Applications, Academic Year 2022-2023

The Department of History and Philosophy of Science and the Department of Informatics and Telecommunications of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens organize and offer the Interdepartmental Program of Graduate Studies in “Science, Technology, Society—Science and Technology Studies”.

The purpose of the Program is to train graduates who will be able to analyze, interpret, intervene and make recommendations on issues of relevance to science and technology, based on concepts and research from the human and the social sciences. The graduates of the Program will be able to identify the best choices regarding science and technology, research and development, innovation, the economy and the society, legal and ethical issues involved in business and the rest of the economic and social institutions that contribute to the shaping of science and technology. They will be especially prepared to contribute to issues emerging from scientific and technological fields connected to: informatics and telecommunications; the sciences and technologies devoted to the protection of the environment; biology, medicine, biotechnology and biomedical technology.

The Program has been structured according to the rules of the relevant Greek law (N.4485/2017) and has been approved by the appropriate body of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (Σύγκλητος). Its regulations and the decision to institute the Program are expected to be published in the government gazette (ΦΕΚ). Time limits for the completion of the program: minimum of two (2) semesters, maximum of four (4). Attending the Program requires payment of a fee in the order of one thousand (1000) euros for the whole Program (500 per semester). This fee may be waived for up to 30% of the students, based on economic criteria, according to the relevant law (N. 4485/2017).

The present Call concerns the admission of a maximum of thirty six (36) students (academic year: 2022-2023). Over the course of their studies, they will be expected to successfully complete either ten (10) courses or seven (7) courses plus a thesis. The courses will be taught in English or Greek. The Program admits holders of degree from cycle A studies, from all Departments of Greek universities, or from equivalent foreign institutions, recognized by the Hellenic National Academic Recognition Information Center (NARIC, ΔΟΑΤΑΠ), as well as graduates of all Departments of Greek universities or recognized foreign ones. It also admits, on the top of the number mentioned above (36 students), members of special categories of the academic community (ΕΕΠ, ΕΔΙΠ, ΕΤΕΠ), according to article 34, paragraph 8, of the relevant law (N.4485/17). The certificate of recognition of the degree from NARIC must be submitted before graduation from the program.
