Research topics

  • -Development of analytical methods (qNMR, LCMS, colorimetric applications) for the quantitation of bioactive ingredients in herbal medicinal products and foods. 
  • -Isolation of compounds with pharmaceutical and nutraceutical interest from natural sources. Focus on olive oil and olive products. Search of new lead compounds from microorganisms, plants and marine organisms. 
  • -Natural products structure elucidation using modern NMR techniques, Mass spectrometry and Molecular Modeling. 
  • -Design and synthesis of new molecules with pharmacological interest (kinase inhibitors, neuroprotective agents, antitumor, antibiotics) based on a natural product core; structure-activity relationships, optimization of lead compounds.
  • -Investigation of natural lead compounds based on plants recorded in historical texts (archaeopharmacology)
  • -Treatment of agricultural wastes for the large-scale production of high added value natural products. Focus on olive and wine industry byproducts. 
  • -Essential oils, volatile, flavor and aroma constituents
