The Master’s Program "Geographic Information Systems" of the Department of Geology and Geoenvironment invites all students of the Department – both undergraduate and postgraduate – to participate in the 1st Best Map Competition - "Mapping the World"! This is a unique opportunity for students to showcase their mapping skills, nurture their creativity, and win valuable prizes!
Competition Requirements:
- Create a map using data provided to the participants. Contestants will primarily use ready-made data. The mapping will be conducted through the ArcGIS Pro platform, to which all students of the Department have access.
- Detailed information regarding the evaluation criteria, as determined by the competition’s three-member committee, can be found in the relevant document.
Who Will Judge the Maps?
The maps will be evaluated by the three-member committee of the competition, consisting of individuals with expertise and recognition in Mapping and Cartography:
- Spyros Staridas, globally recognized for his contributions to the field of Geoinformatics and Cartography.
- Charalampos Kranis, Associate Professor of Tectonic Geology and Geological Mapping, NKUA.
- Anna Karkani, EEDIP member at NKUA, specializing in Geomorphology and Natural Disasters. Cartography & Visualization is one of her teaching subjects.
Prizes:
Prizes will be awarded to the top 3 winners, including:
- A free seminar by Marathon Data Systems, a company with over 40 years of expertise in the field of Geographic Information Systems (GIS).
- Publication of the winning maps on the social media of the Master’s Program and the official websites of the Department and the "Geographic Information Systems" Program.
- Printing of the winning maps and their exhibition in designated areas of the Department of Geology and Geoenvironment.
Added Value of Participation:
- Skill enhancement in the use of ArcGIS Pro.
- Gaining knowledge in map design.
- The winners will have the opportunity to enrich their resumes through this creative challenge.
- The winners will receive recognition through the publication of their maps, potentially contributing to their professional journey.

Complete and submit the participation form (signed via gov.gr) by Friday, 30/5/2025, to the email address: gis@geol.uoa.gr.
